DC AI Needs Assessment:
From Vision to Action
A collaborative report by Washington Leadership Academy and the DC AI Collaborative
As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes education, Washington, DC is at a critical inflection point. This report brings together insights from educators, school leaders, policymakers, and partners across the city to identify the most urgent needs and the clearest opportunities for AI implementation in schools.
Based on findings from the March 25th Pathways to Progress convening, the report highlights key system-level gaps in policy, professional learning, and coordination, and outlines a practical roadmap for moving forward in a way that is equitable, human-centered, and grounded in real classroom experience.
Key Highlights
AI is already being used across DC schools, but in fragmented and inconsistent ways
Educators are motivated to engage, but need clearer guidance, time, and support
There is strong alignment on the need for system-level coordination
The report outlines clear recommendations and a phased roadmap for implementation
“We have a narrow window to get this right. AI could either help close opportunity gaps or widen them if implemented unevenly.”
